Prevention & Education Programs
Youth Action Board
The Youth Action Board is affiliated with the Heartland Coalition for Youth and Families. Our mission statement is "Promoting the importance of physical, social, and emotional health for area teens through positive messages & community actions." We come from all five large high schools in Bloomington Normal, and represent the youth voice for prevention initiatives throughout McLean County. Check out our website at www.heartlandyab.org
Parenting Prevention Series
Family Matters is a parenting program available to parents throughout the community at no cost. This four-part program is completed through the mail and gives background information so that parents can have informed discussions with their children in grades 6-9. These discussions include essential information about preventing alcohol and tobacco use by young people, adolescent development, establishing family guidelines, and helping young people make good decisions. Family Matters is a preferred tool of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
iSafety Taskforce
The iSafety Task Force is a grassroots organization dedicated to providing information on internet safety to community members in central Illinois. The iSafety Task Force recognizes the significant dangers the internet poses for all users. The Task Force is committed to taking steps to ensure safe internet practices are implemented in our homes and in the greater community. The iSafety Mobile Lab is available for community presentations and allows participants to practice hands-on safety techniques under the guidance of a facilitator.

STEPS
The STEPS program is an educational & training tool to help sellers/servers of alcoholic beverages serve responsibly and stay within the law. STEPS serves as a preventive measure to discourage over consumption and keep drunk drivers off the roads.
Classroom mini-courses
Our Prevention Specialists teach alcohol and other drug education courses to 5th through 9th grade students in many of McLean County’s public schools. Mini-courses are held during health classes (one class period each day) and last for 2-3 weeks. The desired outcomes are for students to avoid alcohol and other drug use, prevent the misuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and use healthy alternatives to alcohol, other drugs, and violence for coping with stressors and solving problems.
Community Prevention and Training
Our team of Prevention Specialists have years of experience working with community groups, helping them understand the extent of problems caused by alcohol and other drugs. We promote healthy policies and activities that reduce or eliminate alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, particularly among families and in public places. The desired outcomes are to help families prevent substance abuse of both illicit and prescription drugs, and generate greater awareness among businesses and other organizations about how they can prevent or reduce substance abuse and their related consequences.
